Change is Here to Stay

We are about to enter a seasonal transition from summer to fall: the leaves will wither and fall; children will return to school; and sandals will be replaced by closed-toed shoes.

But we forget: Everything is in transition, all the time.

From yesterday to today—overnight—nothing is the same as it was.

The weather is not the same, the world is not the same, and you are not the same.

Yet we crave sameness, routine, the familiar, and rail against change when it affects our routine, disrupts the familiar. That is, unless we plan for it by embracing the notion (oxymoron though it may be) that transition is a permanent state of being.

Transition: “the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another.”

We are all changing, everyday. At least, let’s hope so. The question becomes, do you accept that or resist it?

The former produces willingness, openness and a sense of adventure.

The latter produces reticence, disengagement and resentment.

Either way, transition is here to stay.
